A Tribute to Stéphane Ackermann: Visionary Curator and Inspiring Collaborator.
Stéphane Ackermann’s life was a masterclass in the power of vision and connection. With a career that spanned some of the most prestigious institutions and initiatives in modern and contemporary art—Yvon Lambert Gallery, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and later, his transformative work in Istanbul—Stéphane left an indelible mark on the global art world. His work was guided by unparalleled intellect, a profound respect for artistic practices, and a gift for nurturing brilliance in others.
For me, Stéphane was more than a celebrated curator and artistic director—he was a mentor and a friend. He saw beyond the surface, urging me to step out of my hermit-like creative world and share my work with others. His encouragement was transformative, and nowhere is his influence more evident than in the Ethnicloom catalogue we created together. His meticulous taste and talent for weaving narrative and form gave life to my daughter Emine’s poetic voice, presented in graphic, thread-like shapes that mirrored the essence of weaving itself, and to the curated elements of the project. Together, they transformed into an artistic statement that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Stéphane’s passion for life and beauty was contagious, touching everyone who had the privilege to know him. His vast knowledge of history, philosophy, and the nuances of life enriched every conversation, offering profound insights into both the grand and the everyday. He had an extraordinary ability to find aesthetics in the smallest details—whether it was his love for cats, the arrangement of objects, or the elegance of daily rituals. Stéphane’s appreciation for the simple yet meaningful moments in life made him not just an intellectual but also a deeply human presence, inspiring those around him to see the world with a more thoughtful and artistic gaze.
Sadly, Stéphane did not live to see the final printed version of this catalogue, but his vision and influence are present on every page.
Stéphane’s ability to bridge cultures and disciplines was extraordinary. His elegance, kindness, and deep understanding of creative processes made him a profound inspiration in the art world and beyond. He was one of the few people whose vision I could trust without hesitation—a trust as enduring as his legacy .
Thank you , Stephane .
