The Founder

Ethnicloom was founded as a natural continuation of its creator, Elif Gönensay’s lifelong passion for design and her talent for beautifying spaces. This passion initially manifested in her journey as the founder of a concept store and self-proclaimed “room maker”, a title lovingly given by her daughter. During this time, she often peppered and enhanced rooms with artisan kilims & pillows native to the region. Through her travels and encounters, Elif observed a growing appreciation for these artisanal weaves and felt it was a shame that these products were so distanced from their origins. Thus, her journey began.

The Purpose

Our purpose is to revive the ancient art of the loom, reconnecting with its local roots while showcasing the unparalleled artistry of the Anatolian woman to a discerning global audience. At Ethnicloom, the tireless search for the perfect yarn is at the heart of our craft. Each yarn is carefully handpicked to meet our rigorous standards of texture and quality. The dyeing process, often repeated to achieve the ideal hue, is an art form in itself, with each shade reflecting a deliberate choice as nature permits.

The Vision

We strive to illuminate the traditional weaving techniques of Anatolia, bringing them into contemporary exploration while integrating innovative methods into our production process. Our focus has expanded to include site-specific, craft-oriented hospitality projects, collaborating with architects and concept creators to seamlessly blend traditional artistry with modern design while harmonizing with their environment.
